Is Forteo More Effective Than Boniva?

06/18/2008 01:51PM

Question:

I have osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hips. I was on Boniva for almost 2 years and my scores got worse. My doctor says Forteo is the only drug for me. I have family with osteoporosis. I have been walk daily for years. I lift weights, swim, ski, etc. I am white and of normal weight. I turn 50 this year and am postmenopausal.

Answer:

Forteo is a brand of the drug teriparatide. Teriparatide is used to rebuild bone and increase bone mineral density. It is used in patients who continue to lose bone mass with drugs like Boniva.  It can be taken for a maximum of two years.

Side effects of teriparatide include leg cramps and dizziness.

Continue to work with your doctor on the best drug treatment for your osteoporosis.
