Are There Any Boric Acid and Lanolin Combination Products Available?

06/25/2008

Question:

Your Q&A regarding the discontinuation of the combination of boric acid and lanolin in Borofax said it was because of toxic effects of boric acid at 5% of ingredients. I have a product named Germa Boric Acid Ointment. It contains 10% boric acid in white petrolatum and has been effective for me in single applications. But as petrolatum makes my skin crack, I cannot use it more than twice a week and that is not frequently enough. I have been looking for a product containing the combination of boric acid 5% and lanolin 95%. Lanolin is very soothing to my skin. Is such a product available today?

Answer:

Sources indicate that the boric acid in lanolin formulation you are seeking is no longer marketed in the United States.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your use of the topical boric acid ointment. One of your health care providers, who knows your medical history as well as your treatment dilemmas, may offer a solution.
