Inverted breast nipples

06/23/2008

Question:

My 11 year-old girl recently started to develop breast tissue. Recently, she noted that the nipples are inverted. Will this resolve with further sexual maturation? If not, what are the cosmetic treatment options?

Answer:

Inverted nipples are common, and for some persist to adulthood.  There can sometimes be issues with breast feeding, but there are nipple shields that can help.  As far as cosmetic options, inverted nipples cannot be seen, except when the breasts are exposed, so it should not require any cosmetic treatment.
