06/17/2008 09:20PM

Question:

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HPV WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN,AND HERPES WHEN I WAS 24.MY BOYFRIEND AND I BOTH HAVE HERPES AND ARE TRIING TO HAVE A BABY.I AM NOT PREGNANT YET,BUT I THINK I UNDERSTAND WHAT I WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHEN/IF I DO GET PREGNANT.I HAVE READ ALOT ABOUT IT.BUT MY QUESTION IS `BECAUSE HE HAS IT TOO WILL IT BE TRANSMITED TO THE BABY THRUOGH HIS SPERM?`

Answer:

Herpes can only be spread to the baby during vaginal delivery and only if there is active virus being shedded at the time of delivery.  The risk of transmitting herpes to the baby is low in women, like yourself, who have a prior history of herpes and are closely monitored in pregnancy.
