Infertility

Prometrium and birth defects

06/20/2008 11:49AM

Question:

I did not have to take Prometrium with my first pregnancy because I was on Clomid, but with this pregnancy, I got pregnant without Clomid, so my OB put me on Prometrium just incase. I could not have labwork done immediately for various reasons, so we`re not even sure I have low progesterone, but my OB said it won`t hurt anything to take the Prometrium either way.

Is there any evidence that Prometrium causes birth defects when taken during pregnancy even if you have normal progesterone beforehand?

Thanks so much!

Answer:

This is natural progesterone, which is used in most IVF patients.  There should be no increased risk of birth defects with this medication.
