Pain during or after intercourse is also called dyspareunia. Dyspareunia can be insertional, meaning that the pain occurs when the penis enters the vagina. This can be due to problems near the outside of the vagina, including infections, inflammation, or trauma.
What you are describing would be called deep dyspareunia, meaning that the pain occurs on thrusting and is usually located deeper within the abdomen or pelvis. Deep dyspareunia can have many causes, including:
- tumors (like a fibroid or ovarian cyst)
- infection (endometritis or PID)
- endometriosis (an inflammatory condition caused by menstrual bleeding in the abdominal cavity)
- or non-gynecological conditions (bowel issues or bladder pain).
In most cases, the painful intercourse goes away when the underlying problem is treated. You will need an examination to see which of these problems may be the cause.
