Is it Safe to Take Glutamine with Calcium D and Multivitamin Supplements?

07/01/2008 03:19PM

Question:

I have Crohn`s disease. I am in remission and I am taking Pentusa and 6MP as medications. I do aerobics a least 3 times a week and I am also using a personal trainer twice a week. A supplement named Glutamine has been suggested to me. The supplements that I currently take are multivitamin, calicum D and glucosamine/chondrontine (triple). Would Glutamine do any harm with any of the items that I am currently taking? How is it helpful? Thank You.

Answer:

Pentasa is a brand of mesalamine.   No interactions have been reported with glutamine and mesalamine and mercaptopurine and multivitamins including calcium and vitamin D and glucosamine and chondroitin.

Glutamine is an amino acid.  In healthy persons, dietary sources provide adequate glutamine to the body.  Glutamine is used in adults with a medical condition called short bowel syndrome as part of a treatment regimen to help increase weight and lean body mass.

Talk to your doctor about the use of glutamine in Crohn's disease and whether it may benefit you.

Keep up your good work with diet and exercise and managing Crohn's disease.   Congratulations on your success.
