what is a safe amount of carps a patient can recieve when having dental treatment done in a quadrant
The number of cartridges of local anesthetic depends on:
- the type of anesthetic
- the presence of a vasoconstrictor (medication like epinephrine or levonordefrin that constricts the blood vessels where the anesthetic is deposited)
- the weight of the patient
- and the medical condition of the patient.
So, there is no "number of cartridges" that is the right amount for any patient. Additionally, there are different reported limits based on whether the patient is monitored and the emergency capability of the practitioner.
What I can tell you is that for a healthy, young patient who weighs 155 lbs, it is generally safe to administer up to 10 cartridges, and possibly more, of 2% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine. I say 10 as for virtually any dental surgical procedure, that is more anesthetic than is likely to be administered. For some oral surgical procedures, this amount may be needed. Also understand that this is not per injection, where less than a cartridge can be administered.
