Xanax in infants07/07/2008 |
We currently foster two preschool children who were exposed to xanax, hydrocodone and alcohol in utero. Their birthmom is currently expecting a third child. She has continued to use these substances during this pregnancy. The baby may be placed in care with our family. What can we expect to see when the baby comes home and how can we help to ease the transition?
Both agents are associated with a discontinuation syndrome. Upon knowing this, the hospital physicians would take appropriate steps to acutely address these issues. Unfortunately, long term risks are difficult to predict due to the inability to adequately determine quantity and quality of these substances of abuse, and of course other factors including prenatal care.
