Premenstrual spotting

07/07/2008

Question:

Hello! I stopped taking birth control pills 2 months ago. The past two periods that I have had since being off the pill, I have noticed some spotting(brownish) 2-3 days before the actual period begins. I did ovulate(confirmed through BBT charting, and my luteal phase was 12 days long, with spotting starting on the 10 day this last time). I was on the pill for 9 years, and before starting the pills, I didn`t have any premenstrual spotting of any kind. Is this just my body still taking time to adjust from being off the pill?? My husband and I would like to start a family, and I was just wondering if this spotting will affect my becoming pregnant(I`ve read about low progesterone, luteal phase defects, etc), and also how long should I wait before visiting my doctor(if it doesn`t regulate on its own)?? I am 26 years old.

Answer:

Most women's menses are different in character when off oral contraceptives as opposed to on oral contraceptives.  The change you notice may simply be due to this transition.  If you are planning pregnancy in the near future, make sure that you are currently taking a folic acid supplement.  Premenstrual spotting is not a contraindication to attempting conception.  However, if you are having inter-menstrual bleeding or are having difficulty conceiving, please see your health care provider.
