Digestive Disorders

Hiatal herna repair

08/04/2008

Question:

My mother has an enormous hiatal hernia. She has COPD, smokes and is overweight. She is in poor health. The hernia causes her pain and is getting worse. So far we have not found a surgeon to operate because of her poor health (the last time she had surgery to try and repair it, she was in the ICU on a ventilator for 3 weeks). How long can she go on with this type of hernia without surgery? Are there any other options besides surgery?

Answer:

Usually, weight loss and diet modification can improve symptoms. In addition, some medications can also help with symptoms. I would seek a consultation with a gastroenterologist for further advice.
