Is it Safe to Switch from Atenolol to Cozaar?

08/06/2008

Question:

Atenolol was not my new doctor`s first choice for my needs. So why wouldnt one be able to switch easily to, as an example, Cozaar? The internet is not helpful with a generic question like this one. Thank you

Answer:

Atenolol is a member of the drug group called beta blockers.   Cozaar is a brand name for the drug losartan. Losartan is a member of the drug group called angiotensin II receptor blockers.

These two drugs are not used interchangeably to treat high blood pressure. These two drugs work in different ways.

In patients with complicating medical problems such as heart failure or asthma or diabetes, beta blockers such as atenolol may not be the first choice drug to treat high blood pressure.

Discuss the choice of drugs with your prescribing doctor.
