What are the Effects of Taking Hydrocodone and Diazepam Together?07/31/2008 08:23PM |
I have severe fibromyalgia and take Hydrocodone 10mg/325 and Diazepam 10mg for pain and muscle spasms. I occasionally have to take Toradol IM when the pain is so severe I get migraine headaches and vomiting. At night I take Melatonin due to insomnia. If I am having extreme pain at night I will take 2 Hydrocodone and 2 Diazepam for sleep. Sometimes but not always I will awake in the middle of the night from pain. If it`s been at least four hours I will take one more Hydrocodone. Other times I take one more hydrocodone and one more diazepam when I wake up in the morning or late morning with pain (this is usually anywhere from 6-12 hours later). I`ve been on the hydrocodone for over 20 years (so I have built up a tolerance to it) and the diazepam for around 3 years. Is this dosing regiman harmful or fatal?
Hydrocodone and diazepam may cause sleepiness and breathing trouble when taken together. This effect is more worrisome in a patient who is just starting to take both drugs. In a patient who has some tolerance to the side effects of either hydrocodone or diazepam, this interaction effect is less likely to happen.
The medication regimen is not harmful as long as you are not taking excessive doses. For the hydrocodone and acetaminophen, do not exceed 6 to 8 tablets in 24 hours or do not take more than 60mg hydrocodone and 4000mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours.
Talk to your doctor about your current pain medications as well as your sleep medicine. There may be newer medications that could help you with pain and insomnia.
