Burning mouth syndrome

07/27/2008

Question:

does radiation to the head & neck region cause burning mouth syndrome?

Answer:

Radiation therapy to the head and neck region does not seem to be a significant cause of burning mouth syndrome, which is thought to be a sensory neuropathy (problem with abnormal function of the sensory nerves that supply the oral region — harmless, but annoying). The age of people with oral cancer is about the same as people who come down with burning mouth syndrome.

However, radiation therapy can cause xerostomia (dry mouth) if the salivary glands are included in the field of radiation. Dry mouth often predisposes a person to oral candidiasis (yeast infection), and this frequently can cause a burning sensation. If a swab for yeast cannot be done, then a course of anti-fungal medication can be tried to see if that has any impact on the burning sensation.
