Dark spot on roof of mouth

07/28/2008

Question:

I Have had a dark spot on the roof of my mouth for couple months now, just wondering if I should have it looked at and what you thought might cause this

Answer:

While most dark spots in the mouth are harmless, we rarely see a very serious tumor of pigment-producing cells called melanoma. Even though it is rare, when it does occur, the usual location is the roof of the mouth (specifically, the hard palate). It would be a good idea to have this spot examined by an oral pathologist so a determination can be made as to whether a biopsy is necessary.
