Septate hymen

08/07/2008

Question:

My daughter is 12 years old and I think she has a septate hymen. How can I know for sure? What can be done at such a young age? She wants to wear tampons but it keeps getting stuck when trying to remove it.

Answer:

Septate hymen can certainly occur and she may be correct.  I would suggest that she see her primary care provider who could do a brief examination to confirm that diagnosis and discuss tampon usage.
