Is it Safe to Take Forteo Before Teeth Removal?

08/10/2008

Question:

I am going to have three teeth removed and want to know if you have to quit taking Forteo. When I was taking Actonel the dentist made me quit it. I am not on Actonol now I am taking Forteo. Thank you.

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

Actonel is part of a group of drugs called bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates are associated with a rare adverse effect called osteonecrosis of the jaw, which is when the jaw bone can become damaged and painful, often after dental surgery.

Forteo works differently than Actonel and has not been linked with osteonecrosis. You should not need to stop using Forteo before your dental surgery; however, you should consult with your dentist before undergoing any procedures.
