Recurring perianal abscess

08/18/2008

Question:

For the past 3 years at about that same time of year, I have been getting perianal abcesses. I`ve had to have all 3 lanced. I`ve just gotten another one this year, bringing the total to 4 in 3 years.

Now I have had ichyness in the perianal region for quite some time (5+ years). My hygine isnt FANTASTIC, but i shower at least 2-5 times a week. I`m fit and healthy otherwise.

What are the likly causes of these abcesses happening again and again? And why always at the same time of year (late winter-almost spring)?

Any prevention ideas?

Answer:

If your abscess is always in the same spot, you most likely have a fistula in ano. Since it is a chronic condition, it is not likely to heal without surgical intervention. Hygiene does not cause or prevent a fistula in ano.
