Abnormal bleeding/discharge

08/12/2008

Question:

I am in my mid-20s and have been on birth control for 5+ years (yasmin the entire time). The past month and a half or so I have had some abnormal bleeding and discharge. I had heavy bleeding a week before I was due for my period that lasted for a day. Since then, my period came as expected, but I have been having brownish/gel-like/light reddish discharge on almost a daily basis and post-intercourse. During this time, I was under an extreme amount of stress. The stress is now gone, but I haven`t normalized yet. What could this be?

Answer:

Missing pills or taking them on an erratic schedule is the most common reason for irregular bleeding. If you have any concern that you are pregnant, you should perform a home pregnancy test. Additionally, if you have any concern about sexually transmitted diseases, you should see a health care provider.

If the irregular bleeding persists after you have initiated a new pack of pills, you should follow-up with the provider who prescribed the pills.
