Hydrocortizone Cream or Ointment?

08/19/2008

Question:

Should I use hydrocortizone in a cream or in an ointment?

Answer:

Creams and ointments contain different proportions of oil to water. An ointment is a topical preparation of a medication that contains water in an oil base. A cream is a topical preparation of a medication that contains either oil in a water base or water in an oil base (depending on the preparation). Because of the higher oil content, ointments tend to feel greasier on the skin, and may be more useful on areas of very dry skin; however they may leave an oily film on clothing and other surfaces.

You may wish to consult with your physician before beginning any new medication as they may recommend a specific product to treat your particular condition.
