Clear discharge after period & pelvic pain

08/26/2008

Question:

Some background, I`m 32 years old, had my first child 19 months ago, and have HPV - the strain that causes warts (had one breakout in 2003). No history of gyn cancer, but mother had endometriosis and a hysterectomy at age 39, both my sisters entered menopause in their 30`s. For the past 8 months, I`ve had pain in my pelvic area around the area of my right ovary. This pain mostly happened before my period, during, and right after, but the past 2 months is happening at other times (and was horrible during my last ovulation) - it`s not constant, but comes and goes. In Feb. during my annual exam, my doctor did a transvaginal ultrasound which came back normal. The past 2 months I`ve also had clear discharge and a lot of it that starts right after my period and goes until my next period. I`ve been seen by my gynecologist for irritation on my vulva and mentioned these to him again (during that time he`s done testing for STD`s, BV, etc which came back normal). He pressed on the right hand area by my ovary and it wasn`t painful at that time so he wasn`t concerned. I have to go back in less than a week for a check up on the skin irritation (for which I`ve been applying a steroid cream) and want to revisit these 2 issues with him. What tests should I ask for? What could the increased discharge and pelvic pain (always right sided) be from?

Answer:

I would talk to your doctor at your next visit and describe your symptoms in detail. It would be helpful to bring a calendar annotating when your periods occur and the pain. Discharge for the first half of the cycle is normally clear and watery. Regardless, your symptoms are not related to HPV.
