Firbroids and treatment08/28/2008 |
I have had numerous problems with pain, heavy menstruation, migrains, etc. I was recently diagnosed with fibroids adn a large cervical polyp. My doctor recommended removal of the polyp, a D&C and endometrial ablation, but could not dilate my cervix during the proceedure. He has given me 3 options for treatment 1. do nothing, 2. take birth control or 3. have a hysterectomy. The hysterectomy is his first choice--but I don`t want one. I have had problems in the past with hormone therapy for PCOS. He isn`t even considering any other options? Are there any?
Not knowing anything else about your age or other medical problems, I can't tell you what options are available or safe.
While most uterine lesions are benign and not dangerous, there can be a concern that a tumor such as a polyp could be malignant (cancer) or precancerous. Having a D&C or removal of the polyp allows the tissue to be analyzed under a microscope to ensure that it is nothing serious. When this procedure cannot be done, the only way to be absolutely certain of the diagnosis is to remove the whole uterus. This might be the reason for recommending the hysterectomy.
