Menstrual abnormalities

08/28/2008

Question:

My girlfriend has always had fairly regular periods and she and I have never had vaginal intercourse. For the past couple of months she has said that she has had some brown discharge in the middle of her cycle. She started her cycle on June 18th, but then didn`t start again until July 25th (a week late). She said that she`s been late before, but it hasn`t been often. She said that this last cycle was normal and lasted about 6 days (with breast enlargement and cramping like normal) and also that she thinks she had a normal fertile period in the middle of her cycle. She is due to start her period again in the next few days, but she has noticed her breasts have been bigger and tender for about the last week. While this is normal a couple days before her period, it is not normal this far in advance. My question is whether or not her hormones could still be out of balance from her late period and that is what is causing her larger breasts and tenderness.

Thank You

Answer:

Breast enlargement and tenderness prior to a menstrual cycle can be due to hormonal changes. If it is persistent even after the period, please encourage her to see her doctor for an evaluation. If there is any redness, warmth, or significant localized tenderness, she should see her doctor as soon as she can for this may be a sign of infection.
