Is Depression a Side Effect of Keppra and Celexa?09/25/2008 |
I have been taking 1500 mg of Keppra and 20 mg of Celexa for about a year now. I have noticed in the last 4 months that I`m on edge, impulsive, angry, thinking of suicide, and frustrated more then I have ever been. I have read that these drugs can cause such side effects. Is it possible that taking these medications together could be the cause of me acting in this manner?
Keppra is an anti-seizure medication that is used commonly for patients with seizure disorders. Keppra may cause loss of appetite, depression, hostility, nervousness, and mood swings. Less commonly Keppra may cause patients to become suicidal or have thoughts of suicide.
Celexa is an anti-depression medication that is commonly used for patients feeling sad or depressed. Celexa may cause nausea/diarrhea, fatigue, and lightheadedness. Less commonly it may cause worsening of depression or suicidal thoughts, although these side effects are rare.
Keppra may be contributing to these mood changes over the past 4 months, especially if you have had a recent dosage increase. These mood changes that you have been experiencing are very serious and you should notify your primary care doctor immediately. Your doctor will be able to discuss better treatment options for you that will help minimize these effects so you are able to function better on a daily basis. If you experience any more thoughts of suicide, you should seek medical attention immediately.
If you have any more medication questions, please feel free to contact your local pharmacy or primary care doctor.
