Eczema in African American children

09/24/2008

Question:

Can anyone recommend a good African American Pediatric Dermatologist in or around the Pittsburgh PA area? My grandson has eczema and has tried various meds that seem not to work. His skin is extremely dry and scaly. His skin collor is light so you can see al lthe bumps and scales all over. We need someone who specializes in Black Skin. Sometimes White Doctors do not have the correct expertise when dealing with a Black persons skins hence all the guess work.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Answer:

The best resource is the American Academy of Dermatology (website: http://www.aad.org), as they have a directory of all board-certified dermatologists in all areas of the country. You can narrow down the search to Pittsburgh PA, and then call the offices that are listed there to specifically ask for an African American pediatric dermatologist. Another option is call the universities in the Pittsburgh area that have a dermatology program, to ask for recommendations regarding African American pediatric dermatologists.
