What Causes Scarring On Fallopian Tubes?

09/25/2008

Question:

We have been trying to conceive for the past 18 months and we are currently undergoing the usual fertility investigations. I am due to go for a HSG and have been researching online to know what to expect. I cam across information about Fallopian tubes being scarred but I cant seem to find what would cause this scarring. Over the past three years I have had several water infections, a couple which were untreated. Could a water infection or a urinary tract infection cause any scarring/blockages? Also what else might cause these scars or blockages?

Answer:

Possible causes of tubal scarring could include: prior surgery, endometriosis (lining of the uterus implanted outside the uterus), or prior pelvic infection.  A simple urinary tract infection would not be expected to cause tubal scarring.
