Prolonged period

09/26/2008

Question:

My daughter is 15 and has had her period for over a year. Seems normal except that it lasts almost 2 weeks, and starts up again in another 2 weeks. Should she be seen or will time straighten this out?

Answer:

Menstrual periods in young adolescents are often irregular. You don't say how long the periods last or how heavy they are. Clearly if the periods are longer than 7 days or remain heavy, your daughter should be seen by a women's health or family practice professional to determine if she is anemic or has other hormonal problems that may be influencing her menstrual cycles.

If she has a "normal" period and then two weeks later has a small amount of spotting, this could be the result of her ovulation and is not very worrisome. However, it sounds as if she has two actual periods a month and that should be checked out. She may have a thyroid problem or need to have some hormonal adjustment to regulate her menses. The bottom line is that if you are concerned, it's important for her to be seen by a reliable professional. Hope this helps.
