Is it Safe to Take Tylenol PM While Having a Weak Liver?

10/29/2008 08:57AM

Question:

I was told than Tylenol PM is hard on the liver and that anyone with a compromised liver condition should not take it. Is that correct?

Answer:

Tylenol PM contains two drugs: acetaminophen and diphenhydramine. Acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage if it is taken in high enough doses. Acetaminophen is more likely to cause liver injury at near normal doses when taken by people who drink alcohol. Acetaminophen is not contraindicated in patients with hepatitis, but doctors may use lower doses.

Talk to your doctor about using Tylenol PM or other forms of acetaminophen. If you need a sleep aid, consider an over-the-counter product that does not contain acetaminophen.
