Pulmonary Hypertension

Normal CT scan and PFT

11/07/2008

Question:

I have had two echos do and they both found that I had PH. They sent me for a ct scan and PFT and both were normal. What is the normal next step? Would it be catherization?

Answer:

The sure way to diagnose pulmonary hypertension is a right heart catheterization. It enables us to measure the pressures and also get an idea as to how well the heart is compensating. This information helps us decide how best to treat the patient. You will also need a test to make sure you do not have clots in your lungs.
