Could Dilantin and Colbozam Cause Stress and Depression?

11/13/2008

Question:

The seizure info is great, but the medicine infomartion from an expert is hard to find. I personally take Dilantin 200ml in the morning and 200 ml evening. I also take 10 ml Colbozam. I find myself forgetful and increased paranoia. Blood monitoring has been steady for 2 months. I have a family to support and know that even without epilepsy I would stress if I had no work, but this condition now makes me unable to do my job. Is medication adding to my stress/depression? I started seizure activity after a bus crash in Dec 07, but no link was found by my doctor or neurologist. Auras still monthly with 2 tonic/clonic seizures since then. Even if there is no direct answer, I would appreciate a direction to look if you have one.

Answer:

"Forgetfulness" or cognitive difficulties in general can sometimes result from these medications, but keep in mind seizures can contribute as well to this problem. I would find the paranoia to be less likely related to the medication. A different anticonvulsant(s) as an alternative might be helpful. If you are not seeing an epileptologist, maybe this would be helpful as well. If you are, these difficulties that you are experiencing need to be reported to that specialist and alternatives could be discussed.
