Can Prazosin Cause Loss of Strength in the Legs?

12/01/2008 08:33AM

Question:

My husband has been taking Prazosin every evening. I know the side effect is drowsiness, but he feel his legs are restless (no strength, very tired). Is this one of the causes. He also have liver Cirrhosis.

Answer:

Why is your husband taking Prazosin? Prazosin is often used to treat hypertension. It is sometimes used for benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate.

Prazosin has been used "off label" (an unapproved use) for cirrhosis of the liver. The drug may increase hepatic blood flow, which, in turn, improves liver function. Prazosin is metabolized (removed from the body) mostly by the liver.

Given his history of liver disease, your husband must be carefully monitored on this medication and the dose may have to be adjusted. Prazosin may cause weakness or tiredness as side effects.

Please discuss your concerns about Prazosin with your husband’s physician. He or she can recommend a dosage change or a different medication if appropriate for your husband's medical condition.
