Should there still be an abscess showing on an exray after a root canal?
Sometimes we can see a less dense area on a radiograph associated with a tooth that is "infected". I think this is what you are referring to when you ask about seeing an abscess on a film. After the source of the problem is addressed (i.e., root canal treatment), it takes some time to see any changes on a radiograph because new bone and other tissues take time to reform.
Usually after treatment is completed, a new radiograph to check for changes can be done in six months to a year. Sometimes it takes even longer than a year.
