Alcoholism and kidney disease

Question:

My friend who drinks every day has recently been having pain on his left side for two or more weeks. He says it feels like a pulled muscle or bruise on the ribs. Could this be the onset of kidney disease resulting from alcohol abuse? What else could be contribiting to this pain?
