Left mid pole cyst11/25/2008 |
During a recent ultrasound test, I was informed of a left mid pole cyst measuring 3.6 x 3.6 x 3.7 cm with no hydronephrosis or stones. Is this of concern and should I be monitoring this with time?Thank you.
I do not know who you are but approximately 50% of American adults have benign simple renal cysts. The key is accurate diagnosis and renal ultrasound is fine for some but not for all diagnoses of renal cysts. The potential for harm to you could be an incorrect diagnosis and CT scan is less user dependent than is ultrasound and thus is more reliably imaged. Ultrasound is often accurate but I suggest that you ask your doctor whether or not he/she is comfortable with this means of diagnostic imaging or whether your doctor prefers CT scan as the definitive means of diagnosis.
