Low Pulse with High Blood Pressure11/21/2008 |
How would you treat high pressure with low pulse ex. 164/100 pulse 42
The value for the normal heart rate varies somewhat with age, but a heart rate of 42 in a person not taking any medication is low. The only exception is in people who are highly trained athletes. Athletes can have a low resting heart rate.
In your case, you are also hypertensive. Your blood pressure should be 130/80 or lower. Some antihypertensive medications (diltiazem, verapamil and beta blockers) can lower the heart rate further and would be contraindicated in a person with low resting heart rate.
In any case, you need a careful examination by a primary care physician or a specialist in internal medicine.
