Are Pain Reliever Pills the Only Alternative to Toe Pain?

12/30/2008

Question:

I have a very sharp shooting pain on top of my left big toe at the base, that comes and goes. On a scale 1-10 it`s an 7 or 8. I have seen two doctors through the V.A. this past year, and they can find nothing wrong. I can not aford a civilan doctor. What else can I do besides taking tons of pain pills?

Answer:

If the pain comes and goes it would be helpful to monitor if anything makes it worse or better and adjust your life style to avoid the pain. For example a certain pair of shoes, walking more than normal, your foot position when sleeping. Because it is shooting it could be from a nerve irritation and these things can cause intermittent pain in the area you describe. I certainly would not recommend 'tons of pain pills' as this will not remove what ever is causing the problem.
