Is it Necessary to Take Cozaar if Lisinopril is Effective?12/31/2008 |
Why would a physician use a combination of Lisinopril with Cozaar? Assuming the Lisinopril was effective, there should be nothing for Cozaar to block, and if Lisinopril is ineffective, why use it.
Thank you for contacting Net Wellness. The agent Lisinopril is a long acting angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Decreased angiotensin II works by blocking the action of certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly. The agent Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor agent (ARB) that also interferes with the action of angiotensin II by inhibiting its receptor or key that is needed for the action of angiotensin II to properly function. This effect then also blocks certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly.
ACE inhibitors and ARB medicines can be used in combination for an added affect that has been studied in various conditions including renal disease, heart failure, and hypertension. There may be a slight increased risk of low blood pressure and other lab values increasing due to the additive effect on renal (kidney) blood flow, blood pressure, and specific electrolyte retention.
On this site, we try to answer general questions about medications but cannot diagnose or recommend treatment. I encourage you to discuss these concerns about your treatment at further length with your prescriber.
