What is the salt content of the regular smokless tobacco, Copenhagen?
The amount of salt, measured as sodium content, varies by brand, ranging from 200-1,200 mg per container or pouch. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2005 Dietary Guidelines suggest a maximum daily intake of 2,300 mg for average healthy adults. For blacks, older adults, or those with hypertension, the maximum is 1,500 mg per day. Here's the catch: If you are watching your salt intake because of hypertension, kidney or heart problems, salt is a minor component of Copenhagen's risk. The nicotine causes significant increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
