Splitting gums

01/08/2009

Question:

above my top tooth, my gum is beginning to split open. i dont have any pain, i am just wandering what this is?

Answer:

This can be due to several reasons:

  • You may have something stuck there that has caused an abscess and related inflammation. This would eventually cause tissue loss, which will appear as gum splitting. You may be hurting yourself while you are brushing. Do not use horizontal forces with a hard brush. We always recommend a soft brush.
  • Sometimes peridontal disease progresses “silently”, meaning no pain and no sign of infection. You generally notice the problem when you have tissue breakdown (with split gums and showing more of root surface).
  • You may also be presenting some type of pathology affecting your gums (other than periodontal disease).

In summary, you need to visit a dentist for a definite diagnosis.
