Blood pressure01/21/2009 |
My friend is paralyzed(Quad) and lately wheb she sits up, her blood pressure shoots way up. This happens quite frequently. We are very concerned, since she usally has low pressure. Have you ever heard of this?
It is not unusual for quadriplegic patients to have unstable blood pressure. Stimulation of the nerves below the injury can cause increase in heart rate and blood pressure, sweating and flushing. This syndrome is called autonomic hyperreflexia.
The blood pressure elevations can be severe. The best treatment in these cases are drugs called alpha blockers. These include terazosin, prazosin or doxazosin.
