Heart Failure

Treatment for Fluid in the Lungs

01/07/2009

Question:

How do you get rid of fluid in the lungs?

Answer:

The treatment of fluid accumulation in the lungs depends upon the cause and process that stimulated the fluid to build up.

A common cause of fluid in and around the lungs is congestive heart failure.  Treatment is medication to improve cardiac function and diuretics to help the body get rid of fluid by increasing urine output.

If there is a large amount of fluid around the lungs, a physician might insert a needle into the space around the lungs to remove the fluid improving breathing and at the same time, the fluid can be sent to the laboratory for analysis to determine the precise cause of the fluid.
