Heart Failure |
Prinivil Information01/07/2009 |
Is there any serious side effects from pro-longed use of Prinivil? Is this one of the better high blood pressure medications? Is there any serious problems due to the immediate stopping of this drug??
Prinivil is the brand name for lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor. ACE inhibitors are a fairly new class of blood pressure drugs. Since their introduction in the late 70`s, they have been found to be excellent antihypertensive agents. ACE inhibitors are effective and very safe. The only serious side effect that has been observed are allergic reactions (with lip and throat swelling - a rare event) and sometines a dry, hacking cough that doesn`t go away. ACE inhibitors are not only excellent drugs for high blood pressure, they also protect the heart and kidneys from the damage of hypertension. They have been found to prolong life in people with congestive heart failure or who have had a heart attack. ACE inhibitors are also able to protect the kidneys in patients with diabetes. In general, diabetics benefit from ACE inhibitors even more than patients without diabetes. No serious side effects have been reported from prolonged use of ACE inhibitors. On the contrary, they have consistently been shown to be as good or better than any other class of antihypertensive drugs and to reduce risk of stroke and heart disease. Because lisinopril has a very long half life, sudden stopping of the drug does not cause rebound hypertension nor any other problems. If you take lisinopril regularly, it takes several weeks to reach its maximum effect. When you stop the drug, it will also take several weeks for the effect to totally go away.
