Skin rash in 6 year old

02/02/2009

Question:

My daughter has developed a fine light red rash on her torso and elbows and legs. It is hardly noticeable and does not seem to bother her unless she gets a tub and than she says it burns. Not sure what it could be. We noticed it a week ago after swimming at the YMCA.

Answer:

This is a very nonspecific rash. The absence of severe itching points against eczema or allergic reactions. It could be a heat rash if it started from bathing in very hot water. Sometimes, a folliculitis also develops from hot tubs. Sometimes it is merely due to dry skin aggravated by heat. If it persists, a visit to the physician or dermatologist should be considered.
