Bun/Creat Ratio

02/05/2009

Question:

My Bun is 22, and my bun/creat ratio is 23, my creat is 0.96. Are these stats serious? What could cause them to be high? I am not in good health with heart and lung disease and am on oxygen 24/7. I am 65 yrs. old. Thank you

Answer:

BUN is not a reliable indicator of kidney function and can vary for many reasons unrelated to renal damage. I cannot determine if the creatinine is abnormal for you. The creatinine is used in a formula which includes your age, gender and race to determine your kidney function. You can do this yourself using a "GFR calculator". The links below will connect you to two calculators. Open the link and enter creatinine, gender, age and race for a result.
