Facet Injections For Neck Pain02/18/2009 |
What is the pre-treatment that goes with these injections? An explanation was given, but it was not clear. Can you help please?
Facet injections in the cervical spine are usually diagnostic injections done to answer the question whether the facet joints are the cause of the neck pain. Some sedation is given but not too much so as not to interfere with the ability to interpret the result of the injections in the immediate post-injection period. Usual sedation is done with 1-2 mg Versed (a short-acting version of Valium) but no pain medications are given intravenously, again, so as not to interfere with the results of the test (i.e. the diagnostic facet nerve injection).
