Genetics of diabetes 1

What are the chances of a lady with type 1 haveing children wiyh diabetes. Also does a women with type 1 have any added problems that may make her less likely to become preganent? Can they be checked out beforehand? Thankyou

The lifetime risk of developing type 1 diabetes in offspring of a parent with type 1 diabetes is ~5%. Also, suboptimal fertility has been reported in women with type 1 diabetes have reduced fertility, but only in those with the onset of disease to be beyond 20 years and those who had poor glycemic control. Women with type 1 diabetes who are willing to become pregnant have to be evaluated and counseled by endocrinologists to minimize the risk to the fetus and mother. Poorly controlled glycemia especially during the first 7 weeks of gestation is associated with congenital anomalies in babies and spontaneous abortion. Also, the physiologic changes related to pregnancy could influence diabetic mother health. Diabetes related complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, hypertension etc could all be affected by pregnancy.
