Pulmonary Fibrosis |
CT scan report03/09/2009 |
my ct scan of the chest statea; mild left basilar subsugmental atelectasis or fibrosis whar does this mean
Atelectasis is when small parts of the lung tissue collapse or shrink up. This can be caused by many conditions including
- blockage of small airways (for example by plugs of mucus),
- damage to the airways (for example by previous infection), or
- by pushing up on the diaphragm of the lung (for example by obesity).
Fibrosis in one location of the lung can be due to many conditions, most commonly previous damage to the lung (for example from previous pneumonia).
A disease that is often discussed in this forum is "idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis". This is a disease where the entire lung fills up with scar. When there is mild fibrosis in just one small area of the lung, it is generally not due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
