Urinary Disorders

Still Feels Like She Needs To Go

03/20/2009

Question:

My daughter has been suffering for some time with a urinary problem. After she urinates, she still feels like she needs to go. She has been tested for a uti which was negative. They have also cultured her urine which showed up negative. Although, they only cultured it over night. Can she still have bacteria in her urine that isn`t showing up? She is currently on antibiotics for strep throat and it seems like her urinary systems have diminished quit a bit.

Answer:

If she is responding to antimicrobial therapy she could have had urethritis. This is difficult to diagnose by routine culture. You did not mention how old she is and if she is engaged with sexual relation. Little girls can get mild infection due to poor hygiene or if they are so called vaginal voiders. This has to be determined by a urologist. Also, bladder scanner may reveal if she truly has residual urine. Again a trip to a urologist may be helpful.
