High iron total low hemoglobin and hematocrit

03/19/2009

Question:

My 18 year old daughter was recently tested for anemia. Her Iron Total was 206 (high) while her Hemoglobin was 11.9 and Hematocrit was 34.9. All other tests associated with her CBC where within range. We are being told she should see a oncologist as this is abnormal and may be hemochromatosis but from what I read on hemochromatosis she would also have a high TBIC, Ferritina nd Transfrrin Saturation numbers, correct?

Answer:

While the serum iron is elevated, all the iron studies can vary quite a bit depending on acute inflammatory reactions, etc., and they are notoriously ureliable.  You can also have a high serum iron with hemochromatosis despite being anemic.

An appropriate referral to a hematologist or oncologist for further evaluation would certainly be the right way to go here.
