Extremely high WBC count?

A co-worker of mine has a 6 year old that tested positive for strep throat last week but had a WBC count of 39,000. Is is possible that his WBC count is due to the strep throat even though it`s this high? Or is there something else maybe going on?

It is possible that this is related to strep throat, but without knowing the specifics and the ability to examine the child it is difficult to provide more specific information.
